In short: learn Linux and networking basics, pass one associate cloud certification (Azure AZ-104 or AWS Solutions Architect Associate), add automation (scripting, Terraform, CI/CD) and build a small portfolio of real projects. Plan for 9 to 12 months of steady part-time work.
Cloud roles are among the most searched IT jobs in Pakistan and the Gulf, and many can be done remotely. But "learn cloud" is too vague. Here is the order that works.
Step 1: Foundations (6 to 10 weeks)
Cloud is other people's servers and networks. You need to understand both.
- Linux: files, permissions, users, services, logs, package management, basic shell scripts. A course like RHCSA covers this properly.
- Networking: IP addressing and subnetting, DNS, routing, NAT, firewalls and VPNs. CCNA is the classic way to learn it.
You do not need both certifications before cloud, but you do need the skills.
Step 2: One cloud, one associate certification (8 to 12 weeks)
Pick one platform and go deep before you touch the second.
| Microsoft Azure | Amazon Web Services | |
|---|---|---|
| First certification | AZ-104 Azure Administrator | SAA-C03 Solutions Architect Associate |
| Strong in | Enterprises using Microsoft 365 and Windows | Startups, product companies, many remote roles |
| Good next step | AZ-400, SC-500 | SOA-C03, DevOps Professional |
Not sure? Read AZ-104 or AWS SAA-C03: which first. INFOTICS also runs Azure and AWS dual-certification programs.
Step 3: Automation (6 to 8 weeks)
Clicking in a portal does not scale. Employers look for:
- Scripting: Bash and PowerShell, a little Python
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform or Bicep/CloudFormation
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps pipelines
- Containers: Docker, then Kubernetes basics
The DevOps Engineering program brings these together.
Step 4: A portfolio that proves it
Three small, real projects beat ten course certificates:
- A web app deployed with a load balancer, autoscaling and monitoring
- The same infrastructure written in Terraform, deployed from a pipeline
- A secured network: private subnets, a bastion or VPN, and logs you can show
Write a short README for each with a diagram. Put the links on your CV and LinkedIn.
Step 5: Apply smartly
- Start with cloud support, junior cloud or system administrator roles that touch the cloud
- Mention the exact services you used (for example Azure Virtual Network, Key Vault, Monitor)
- Practice explaining one project end to end in an interview
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a cloud engineer without a degree?
Yes. Many employers care more about certifications and projects you can demonstrate, although some large companies and Gulf visas still ask for a degree.
Azure or AWS for Pakistan?
Both are in demand. Azure is common in banks, telecoms and enterprises; AWS is common in startups and remote work. Pick one, finish it, then add the other.
How do I check if I am ready for the exam?
Take a free practice test to see your score and weak topics, then focus your revision there.
