In short: yes. Every cloud, data center and AI workload runs on networks, and CCNA (exam 200-301) is still the most recognized entry certification for networking. It is also an excellent foundation for cloud and security careers.
People sometimes say "everything is cloud now, so networking is dead." The opposite is true: cloud networks, VPNs, firewalls and Wi-Fi all need people who understand how packets move.
What CCNA teaches
- Network fundamentals: IP addressing, subnetting, switching and routing
- Network access: VLANs, wireless
- IP connectivity: static and dynamic routing (OSPF)
- IP services: DHCP, DNS, NAT, NTP
- Security fundamentals: access control lists, device hardening
- Automation and programmability: how modern networks are managed with controllers and APIs
Cisco updates the exam blueprint from time to time; check the current CCNA exam topics on Cisco's website before you book.
Who CCNA is for
| You are… | CCNA helps you… |
|---|---|
| A fresh graduate | Get a first role in a NOC, help desk or network support |
| In IT support | Move into network administration |
| Heading to cloud | Understand virtual networks, VPNs and routing in Azure and AWS |
| Heading to security | Understand what firewalls and attacks actually do |
What comes after CCNA
- CCNP Enterprise for senior network engineering.
- Cloud (AZ-104 or AWS) where your networking knowledge is a big advantage.
- Security paths, where understanding traffic is essential.
How networking skills show up in cloud jobs
Here is the same idea, first on a campus network and then in the cloud. If you understand the left column, the right column is easy:
| On-premises (CCNA) | In Azure | In AWS |
|---|---|---|
| IP addressing and subnetting | Virtual network address space and subnets | VPC CIDR blocks and subnets |
| Routing tables | Route tables and user-defined routes | Route tables |
| Access control lists | Network security groups | Security groups and network ACLs |
| NAT | NAT gateway | NAT gateway |
| Site-to-site VPN | VPN gateway | Site-to-Site VPN |
| DNS and DHCP | Azure DNS, private DNS zones | Route 53 |
Cloud engineers who cannot subnet or read a routing table get stuck the first time something does not connect. CCNA fixes that for good.
A 12-week CCNA study plan
| Weeks | Topic | Lab practice |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Network fundamentals, IPv4 and IPv6, subnetting | Subnetting drills every day until it is quick |
| 3–4 | Switching, VLANs, trunking, spanning tree | Build a multi-VLAN office network |
| 5–6 | Routing: static and OSPF | Connect three sites and verify paths |
| 7–8 | IP services: DHCP, DNS, NAT, NTP | Give a branch office internet access with NAT |
| 9 | Wireless fundamentals | Configure a wireless controller scenario |
| 10 | Security fundamentals: ACLs, port security, device hardening | Block and allow traffic precisely |
| 11 | Automation and programmability | Read JSON, understand REST APIs and controllers |
| 12 | Timed practice exams and review | Fix every weak domain with a lab |
Careers CCNA leads to
- NOC Engineer monitoring and fixing networks for ISPs, banks and telecoms
- Network Administrator running a company's switches, routers, Wi-Fi and firewalls
- Network Support Engineer at system integrators and managed service providers
- A strong base for cloud and security roles later
Frequently asked questions
Is CCNA hard for beginners?
It is a lot of content, but it is designed as an entry certification. With live classes and regular lab practice in Packet Tracer or real equipment, beginners pass it.
Does CCNA expire?
Cisco certifications are valid for three years and can be renewed through continuing education or exams. Check Cisco's current recertification policy.
Should I do CCNA or a cloud certification first?
If you are new to IT, CCNA first gives you foundations that make cloud much easier. If you already work in IT, you can start with cloud.
Do I need real Cisco equipment?
No. Simulators and labs cover what you need to learn and practice.
