VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) integrates vSphere, vSAN, NSX and cloud-management tooling into one lifecycle-managed platform. Because it builds on many technologies, the order in which you learn them matters.
Step 1: master vSphere
Be comfortable with ESXi, vCenter, virtual machines, standard and distributed switches, datastores, DRS, HA and vMotion. This is the base for everything else, and it is exactly what our VVF programme teaches.
Step 2: understand the VCF architecture
Learn the vocabulary: the management domain, VI workload domains, SDDC Manager, and how hosts are commissioned into a pool and then assigned to domains. Read the planning and preparation material before you touch a lab; most VCF problems begin with networking, DNS or certificate prerequisites.
Step 3: storage with vSAN
Understand storage policies, failures to tolerate, fault domains and health checks. Practise changing a policy on a running workload and watching the resync.
Step 4: networking with NSX
Learn transport zones, segments, Tier-0 and Tier-1 gateways, Edge clusters and the distributed firewall. Build a small multi-tier application network and write firewall rules between tiers.
Step 5: lifecycle and day-2 operations
Bundles, precheck, upgrades, password and certificate rotation, backup and restore, monitoring and capacity. This is where administrators spend most of their time in production.
Practise the way you will work
Use repeatable scenarios: deploy, break, diagnose, fix, document. Our VCF programme is structured this way. Product names and versions change with each release, so always check current VMware/Broadcom documentation.
